Barlow Tyrie | Care & Maintenance

TEAK

Teak (Tectona Grandis) is a deciduous hardwood tree that is native to SouthEast Asia. Originally found naturally in several countries in the region, significant quantities are now only found in Burma. Due to its naturally high oil content, Teak is resistant to both rotting and warping when exposed to climatic extremes. For centuries, this special quality of Teak has made it the preferred choice for marine decking and construction and the premium timber for outdoor furniture. Due to the high value of Teak, over the years it has been planted and cultivated as a cash crop in many countries including Indonesia and several in Africa and South America. Teak is not naturally found in these areas, none of which are rainforests.

Care

Over a few months in an outdoor environment, untreated teak will weather to a silver gray color, which is due to the action of sunlight. Many owners of teak furniture prefer this natural patina and an example is shown in the seat pictured above. The following care products may be used to retain or restore the original color of Teak and protect it as described. In the UK we recommend you contact Andrew Banks at www.andrewbanks.co.uk who will maintain your furniture using our care products if you do not wish to undertake this work yourself.

    Products:

  • Teak Colour Guard - 4TCG applied annually will maintain the natural color of teak using UV inhibitors to slow the natural graying process caused by sunlight and pigments that help to maintain its natural color. This treatment must be applied before the Teak is allowed to weather or after cleaning.
  • Teak Stain Guard – 4TSG forms an invisible layer to protect your Teak from everyday stains such as butter, oil and red wine making cleaning easier.
  • Teak Cleaner – 4TC will quickly remove accumulated dirt.
  • Teak Oil – 4TO is the traditional method of retaining the color of Teak although its repeated application will make the Teak much darker in color and for this reason we do not recommend its repeated use.
  • Anti-Wasp Solution – 4WS contains vanilla essence that harmlessly deters wasps from defacing the surface of wood by harvesting the cellulose to build their nests. This product is not available in the USA.

STAINLESS STEEL

We make our furniture using 316 “marine grade” stainless steel to withstand the rigors of an outdoor environment. However, you should undertake regular maintenance using our care product to preserve the fine appearance of your furniture.

  • To Clean:

Cleaning once or twice a year will be adequate in most circumstances but we recommend more frequent cleaning in a coastal environment and occasionally rinsing your furniture with fresh water. Stainless steel furniture used in a chlorinated indoor environment will require frequent cleaning and is therefore not recommended.

  • Care:

Stainless Steel Clean & Guard – 4SSCG All Stainless Steel is susceptible to brown surface marks, which are cosmetic and do not damage the product. Remove these marks by regular cleaning with this care product, which leaves a fine layer of Teflon® to help prevent their appearance.

ALUMINUM

Aluminum is a strong yet light material that does not corrode or rust making it ideal for outdoor furniture that benefits from being easily moved in use. Our aluminum furniture is pre-washed, etch primed and electrostatically powder coated for an optimum, even cover before being baked in an oven to fix the finish. This process prevents oxidation and gives an attractive, hard wearing surface and the possibility to offer varied color themes.

  • Care:
  • Aluminum Cleaner – 4AC Aluminium may be washed with soapy water or treated with our Powder Coated Aluminum Cleaner, supplied with an application pad.

WOVEN

We use the finest synthetic material for our Woven Furniture that is hand-woven over a powder coated aluminum frame to produce splendid furniture that is strong, color fast and entirely resistant to sun and rain.

  • Care:
  • Textilene® and Woven Non-Foam Cleaner – 4WTC This cleaner maintains Textilene and Woven furniture without any unsightly residue.

BRAIDED CORD

Our round braided cord is made from Textilene® and Diversatex® branded yarns that use non-stretch polyester with a PVC coating. This material is ideal for outdoor furniture being light in weight, resistant to UV light, mold and waterproof with a deserved reputation for durability and strength.

  • Care:
  • Textilene® and Woven Non-Foam Cleaner – 4WTC This cleaner maintains Textilene and Woven furniture without any unsightly residue.

TEXTILENE® SLING

We manufacture the slings for our aluminum, teak and stainless steel furniture from high quality Textilene® brand material that is made from PVC coated polyester yarn. This material is strong and durable with a high resistance to mildew in a damp environment. Textilene® is fire resistant and requires very little maintenance.

  • Care:
  • Textilene® and Woven Non-Foam Cleaner - This cleaner maintains Textilene and Woven furniture without any unsightly residue.

COVERS:

Our furniture covers are made using WeatherMAX-LT®, a modified highly UV-resistant polyester fabric offering superior strength and durability with long-term color retention. This fabric is the industry’s most balanced and cost-effective fabric available for outdoor applications requiring high water repellency and excellent breathability; the perfect choice for outdoor furniture covers where lightness and ease of storage offer an advantage. These lightweight, one-way breathable covers allow trapped moisture to disperse, but prevent rain and dust from penetrating. A unique fastening ensures a secure fit. The life and good looks of the cover depend a great deal on the way it is used and how it is cared for. The covers are easy to put on and remove, and can be stored in their own pouch when not required.

      Hints:

    • If the furniture has any sharp corners or edges, place foam rubber on the sharp edge to reduce risk of puncture or abrasion of the covers.
    • For table and chair combinations, placing an object, such as a beach ball, under the center of the cover can help with water drainage.
    • When covering the Dune daybed and ottoman please ensure that the ottoman and cushion are placed on top of the base cushion before covering.
    • **Note: covers for standard dining groups are designed to cover the furniture with the chairs not under the table. Please allow 4 to 6 weeks for delivery**

CUSHIONS

To Clean: One of the best ways to keep Sunbrella® fabrics looking good is to hose fabrics off on a monthly basis with clean water. This helps prevent dirt from becoming deeply embedded in the fabric and eliminates the need for more frequent vigorous cleaning. In most environments, a thorough cleaning will be needed every two to three years.

While Sunbrella fabric offers excellent protection against stains, full removal is not always guaranteed if spills are not addressed promptly. Protect the area round the Sunbrella fabric when using a bleach solution – bleach may discolor non-Sunbrela Fabrics. Always rinse Sunbrella thoroughly to completely remove bleach.

**Please be aware of the environment when cleaning with bleach. Bleach can have harmful effects on the natural environment around you. We do not advise using bleach if you are surrounded by a body of water or other environment that could be affected** Sunbrella should only be allowed to air dry. Use of bleach and/or advanced age of the fabric application may impact the deterioration of the sewing thread and other non-Sunbrella components. For more information, call 336.221.2211

    • Rinse the fabric thoroughly to remove all soap residue.
    • Air dry.
Though Sunbrela Fabrics can be used both outdoors and in, your cleaning methods should differ slightly indoors and out because of the fabrication and manufacturing of the furniture. We recommend using the appropriate cleaning instructions for your application.
  • Outdoor Upholstery:

      • First close all zippers.
      • Machine wash in cold water on the delicate cycle with normal amounts of mild laundry detergent. For severe mold or mildew, add 1 cup of bleach.

      • Rinse thoroughly to remove all soap residue and allow fabric to air dry.
    • Seam-To-Seam Cleaning: When cleaning upholstered pieces, clean the entire surface area of the fabric, from seam to seam, instead of rubbing the fabric in a circular motion on the spill. This method, along with an extractor, may be required in order to avoid water rings and residue.
    • Mold and Mildew: Sunbrela Fabrics do not promote mildew growth, however, mildew may grow on dirt and other foreign substances if not removed from the fabric. To remove mold or mildew:
      • Prepare a solution of 1 cup of bleach and 1/4 cup mild soap per gallon of water.
      • Spray on the entire area and allow to soak into the fabric for 15 minutes.

      • Apply a light mist of mild soap and water using a spray bottle.
      • Work the solution into the spill by lightly agitating the entire surface area of the fabric, moving from seam to seam, with a sponge or very soft bristle brush. Avoid scrubbing, and do not use a hard bristled brush or anything that will abrade the fabric.
      • Rinse the entire fabric thoroughly to remove all soap residue.
      • Blot excess moisture with a clean, soft towel or sponge.
      • Blot or wet-vacuum excess water from the entire surface area of the fabric, moving from seam to seam.

  • Seam-To-Seam Cleaning: When cleaning upholstered pieces, clean the entire surface area of the fabric, from seam to seam, instead of rubbing the fabric in a circular motion on the spill. This method, along with an extractor, may be required in order to avoid water rings and residue.
  • Oil-Based Spills :
    • Immediately apply an absorbent such as corn starch directly on the oil-based spill.
    • Let sit for 10 minutes and remove the excess using a straight edge or ruler. This helps remove the spill and prevents it from being pressed into the fabric.
    • Then proceed with the cleaning process.
    • For other spills, products such as 303® Multi-Surface Cleaner, Dawn® , or Resolve® are applicable. Specific information on spill cleaning is available at Sunbrella.com/cleaningguide

      • ALLOY DECORATIVE SHADE FABRICS

One of the best ways to keep Sunbrella® Shade fabrics that contain PVC looking good and to delay deep or vigorous cleanings is to properly maintain the fabrics. This can be accomplished by simply brushing off dirt before it becomes embedded in the fabrics.

        • To Clean:
          • Brush off loose dirt.
          • Hose down.
          • Prepare a cleaning solution of water and mild soap such as Woolite® or Dawn® dishwashing liquid.
          • Use a sponge to clean.
          • Allow the cleaning solution to soak into the fabric. Rinse thoroughly until all soap residue is removed.
          • Air dry.
        • Stubborn Stains, Spills, & Mildew: Sunbrela Fabrics do not promote mildew growth, however, mildew may grow on dirt and other foreign substances that are not removed from the fabric. To clean stubborn spills:
          • Prepare a solution of 1 cup of bleach and 1/4 cup mild soap per gallon of clean water.
          • Allow the mixture to soak into the fabric for up to 15 minutes.
          • Remove the spill with a sponge or clean towel.
          • Rinse thoroughly until all soap residue is removed.
          • Allow fabric to air dry.
          • If spill and/or mildew is severe, bleach quantities may be increased. Isopropyl alcohol can also be used to spot clean stubborn spills, using a sponge or towel.
**DO NOTdry clean Sunbrela Fabrics** **DO NOT apply any solvent-based cleaning solutions to Sunbrella Shade fabrics that contain PVC, as it may accelerate the aging and degradation of the fabric. These items would include chemicals such as acetone, liquid fuels, paint thinner, mineral spirits and turpentine**
